Batik Program
Students
at Yakanarra Community School learned how to create hand made batiks in a
program headed by Jan Dayman. Beginning with creating their own
designs, students learned how to apply wax to the cloth to preserve their
designs. Some of the batik designs were applied to squares of cloth
while others were applied to a cloth bag.

The
dying process was done by hand in a large vat heated open an open fire while
students took turns stirring and testing the fabrics. The end result was a
beautiful array of interesting and colourful batik bags and swatches.
As a final phase of the project, the students put together a collection of
the finest batik prints and had the opportunity of showing their work at the
Matso's Gallery in Broome.
