The community members wanted a school to be built here at Jarlmadangah Burru
because they want their kids to stay in the community. Then they can learn
how to speak their languages and be strong young people in themselves, so when
they grow up they will be able to know what to do with their lives.

Nyikina
Mangala Community School was established in 2000 to provide an appropriate
educational service for Jarlmadangah Burru Aboriginal Community. Jarlmadangah
Burru is located in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is
approximately 120kms South East of Derby off the Great Northern Highway, on Mt
Anderson station. The community has a population of 90 residents that run
various community enterprises including a store, aquaculture facility, JBAC
Adventures Camel Safaris, cultural mapping, a women’s centre, workshop and
clinic. Community members also take an active role in the running of our school
which was recognized when we received a National Award for Excellence in Family
School Partnerships in 2007.
The school provides educational programs with a strong
emphasis on literacy and numeracy as well as teaching the traditional languages
and culture of Nyikina and Mangala. The school is part of the National
Accelerated Literacy Program, which is specifically designed to help Indigenous
students achieve mainstream levels of literacy. Nyikina Mangala Community School
is registered from K - 10 and currently caters for 35 students. Students are
grouped into Junior Primary, Middle Primary and Upper Primary/Secondary.

Also
located at the school is a new Daycare facility catering for 0-3 year olds.
The school aims to support the students in developing the
necessary skills to be able to contribute within Jarlmadangah Burru and to
confidently succeed in the wider community where Standard Australian English is
spoken. Many of our senior students go on to complete their secondary education
in schools such as Tardun Christian Brothers Agricultural School, Presbyterian
Ladies College and Wongutha CAPS.
