Purnululu Aboriginal Community Independent School
 |
Purnululu
Aboriginal Community Independent
School was established in 1991 to provide an educational service for the
traditional owners of Purnululu National Park and adjacent lands.
Purnululu Aboriginal Corporation is the governing body of the educational
service. The total population of adult members represented by Purnululu
Aboriginal Corporation is in excess of 400.
|
 |
These people reside throughout the East
Kimberley
in major centres such as Halls Creek and Kununurra as well as smaller
communities such as Wurreranginy, Warmun, Rukuny, Ngiliny,
Anjaru, Kartang Rija and Kayirrewarreny. Wurreranginy also known as Frog
Hollow is a functioning, vibrant community that has produced some very talented
artists such as Beerbee mungari, Beryline Mung and the upcoming rising start
Marika Mung.
|
The residential patterns, the importance of family and land, language diversity
and the roles of informal and formal learning environments have been the
important issues in developing the school-based curriculum, physical
infrastructure and administrative features of the service. All service
developments (curriculum, physical infrastructure and administrative
arrangements) need to fit with the residential patterns of the student group
working towards a sustainable program. Careful planning and implementation
within these areas will ensure that Purnululu School continues to effectively
address the educational needs of the target group. |
 |
 |
This educational service is open to all group members and functions in many
ways to meet the needs of those choosing to use the service. It includes a
registered kindergarten, pre-primary/primary and lower secondary school service.
The academic, social, political, physical and economic developments which occur
in the educational service are an integral part of the communities'/families'
lives. |
